CAB’s HIV Outreach Program is targeted toward injection drug users,
homeless women and their families, and women working in the sex
industry. The HIV program includes education and advocacy and provides
targeted outreach, education, counseling and referrals. For most of our
HIV outreach, we use a harm-reduction model.
Harm reduction means that we give drug users and sex-industry workers
practical strategies to reduce the negative consequences of drug use. We
teach and give the tools to move drug users toward safer use, to more
managed drug-use and eventually toward treatment or abstinence.
CAB has five HIV programs:
Betsy Program – A harm-reduction approach of working with women
in the sex industry, providing training on several techniques to keep
them safe while practicing their trade.
Healthy Streets –Training, intervention and advice to injection
drug users through street outreach and harm reduction workshops.
HIV Training – For other CAB staff and externally.
HIV Task Force – Addresses HIV issues across our agency and its
programs.
Women RISE (Risk, Identification, Strategies and Empowerment) – A
collaboration of CAB Health & Recovery Services, Inc. and the Institute
for Health & Recovery. The Women RISE program provides HIV risk
reduction counseling and prevention case management for at-risk woman on
the North Shore area of Massachusetts. It is mainly targeted at woman
and their families who are either homeless or living in family shelters
or motels, or who are identified via CAB’s current outreach program.
How do I refer someone or inquire about HIV training?

The Narcan Outreach Program:
A pilot outreach program for the public,
families and active opioid drug users in the use of Narcan, a medication
kit to reverse the effects of fatal drug overdoses. In this pilot
program, families, friends and active users can get trained in how to
use it to help someone who is overdosing to stabilize breathing. For
those interested, we will also provide information on treatment and
other facilities.
